Bio:

I was born and raised in South Burlington, Vermont and began playing the guitar at age 8.  After several years of strumming along with Chet Atkins albums and learning the ins and outs of music theory from kindly teachers, I was given a 5-string banjo on my 16th birthday.  I didn't know until then how much I loved bluegrass; it was the beginning of a lifelong affection for it and all other forms of Americana music.

In my early 20s, I hooked up with college friends and helped form the acoustic band Up the Creek.  We played in northern Vermont at festivals and private functions throughout the 1980s.

In 1988, I joined the New England-based bluegrass group Breakaway as guitarist, lead and harmony vocalist, and principle songwriter.  The band performed in the U.S. and Canada at such venues as the Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival (now known as Grey Fox), the International Bluegrass Music Association Fan Fest in Kentucky, and the Folk Alliance in Toronto.  During the 1990s, Breakaway recorded 4 CDs which received popular and critical acclaim.

From 2001 to 2005,  I was a member of the Bluegrass Gospel Project, a diverse group of talented singers, players, and songwriters based in central Vermont.  The band has released several live recordings and continues to tour extensively, enjoying wide crossover appeal among secular and religious fans.

While playing in Breakaway, I began to teach guitar and banjo privately. Music instruction continues to be one of the great joys of my personal and professional life.  Currently, I work with students individually and in group settings, take part in studio session work, and perform with noted acoustic musicians.  I live in South Burlington with my beloved partner Marcia.

Testimonials:

"At age 47 after a lifelong love of music and a desire to play the guitar,  I found making that first step toward learning a difficult one. Fear of failure and intimidation about the learning experience was finally overcome by a call to Andy. In the year and a half since I have been taking lessons I have thoroughly enjoyed the company as well as the instruction, and I find my skill level progressing nicely."  D. Farmer, Hinesburg, VT

"The most important piece of advice for me as a banjo player was given by Andy Greene, at one of his Bluegrass 101 seminars: 'Banjo players: play out, play strongly and dig in.'  This is just one gem from Andy, one of the best banjo teachers I've ever met. "   L. Kachadorian, Woodstock, VT

"Andy has been teaching our eleven-year-old son guitar lessons for about a year. Our son loves his lessons, and says that Andy is a very patient teacher and makes learning the guitar fun."   J. Burbank, Williston, VT

"I have known Andy as an accomplished musician and guitar instructor for several years. He has always been helpful and patient right from my very first session and I surely would feel very confident recommending Andy as a teacher of guitar to anyone."   S. Blondin, Essex Junction, VT

"I've been sending students to Andy for over ten years, always with great results."   D. Pomeroy, Manager, Vermont Folk Instruments, Burlington, VT

"Andy is not only a gifted musician, but is able to teach what he knows in a thoughtful and very effective manner. His teaching methods allow for a comfortable learning environment, and he is able to tailor the lessons to each student's individual needs. The Bluegrass 101 workshops are especially helpful, and provide a much needed service to the music community."   D. Rivers, Hinesburg, VT

"In addition to teaching the details of playing the particular instrument, Andy is able to explain what's happening inside the music -- what creates the overall sound and feel. His approach is to understand where you are musically and where your interests lie, then provide the guidance to progress toward your goals. He encourages students to express their own individuality while learning from the music of classic and current practitioners. My time with him has really improved my playing."
A. Botula, Essex Junction, VT

"Andy has been my guitar teacher for over 12 years, and I still learn something new with each lesson. Andy's teaching style is customized to each student, and not only does he teach the mechanics of the music, but also how to listen to and feel the music. In addition to being a top-notch musician, Andy is an excellent instructor - I feel privileged to have him as a teacher."   L. Paskiewicz, Starksboro, VT
